Crictor: Singularity University Part 1 - Crictor

The problem with the singularity. Is that there is a huge controversial if we are close to it at all. No one really can give a real prediction based on imperial measurements.

We are not even sure in what terms to talk about it. Its not CPU power, we can't just use Moore's law.

I just tried to download the full audio, and iceweasel stopped me with a message about a redirection loop. Felt kind of ironic when discussing the singularity...

From what I understand they did not upload the full audio yet.

    Hi,

Sorry for not posting something about this earlier.
For many of the more recent videos we have not uploaded the audio. If you'd like the audio version of one of these interviews let us know and we will upload it. If you would still like to hear the audio of this interview please let us know.

    Thanks,
    Yael

If it's not a bother, and assuming the audio contains more than the 4:20 of the video, then yes, I'm still interested.

    Thanks,
    Shai.

When asked about our future concerns when the singularity arrives, Shai didn't mention one very important aspect of the singularity - its safety. Some technologies, like nanotechnology and AI, when sufficiently powerful, could be very volatile - small mistakes in handling them may cascade into a universal catastrophe. (See Drexler's Engines of Creation and the SIAI's analysis of Hard Takeoff scenario.)

Perhaps this is what Shai meant when he talked about the exponential increase in technology versus the slower increase in our understanding of ethics and society, but I think the topic of safety deserves an explicit mention.
